The Weight of Nothing

Rest is not the reward for finishing. It is part of the work.

I used to believe that stillness was something I would earn one day, in a clean house, with a finished list. I have since met a great many people with clean houses, and none of them described rest as easy.

The guilt you feel sitting down is not a moral signal. It is a habit of the nervous system, trained by years of being rewarded for motion.

Here is the experiment for this week: sit for ten minutes doing nothing that could be photographed or reported. No podcast, no notes, no water bottle. If the guilt arrives — and it will — greet it by name. 'There it is. That's the old training.'

Then stay a little longer than feels comfortable. Nothing needs to happen. That is the entire assignment.
