Let the day end without your permission.

Sleep is not a switch, though most nights we treat it like one. We close the laptop and expect the mind to close with it, as though the last eleven hours had not happened.

The last hour matters more than the last minute. Begin by turning the lights down earlier than feels necessary. You are not going to bed; you are leaving the day.

Then, lying down, travel slowly through the body from the feet upward, and at each place ask a single question: can this let go of a little weight? Not all of it. A little.

If the mind starts planning, do not argue with it. Say, quietly, 'not now.' Then return to the feet. You will return many times. Each return is the practice.
